Wandergesellen Pt. I

Last weekend I started working on my new long term project about Wandergesellen, roughly translated as journeying craftsmen. The Wandergesellentum dates back to late medieval times and is still practiced by several hundred young craftsmen. I took some pictures at the 180th May Convention of the Rolandsbrüder, one of the German guildes of journeyman.

The rules of tradition are rigorous and many. With my project I want to explore why young people still submit themselves to medieval rulebooks and what jorneying/travelling means for them. (The only good English-language explanation of Wandergesellen I know is the movie “Waltzing Mathilda“.)

To cut a long weekend with little sleep, new friends, and a lot of beer short, I am looking very much forward to work more on this long term project. Expect to see and read more about it…

Yours,

Claudius Schulze
